2022 Fieldwork Complete- 5 Vultures tagged

  • by

The field team carried out fieldwork in Uzbekistan between 25th July 2022 – 4th August 2022. The team, Vladimir Dobrev, Anna Ten, Valentine Soldatov and Dobromir Dobrev, all put a huge effort into surveying rubbish dumps near the ancient city of Samarkand.

The team used new techniques to trap adult vultures as they foraged on the rubbish dumps. This required early mornings and long days of setting traps and monitoring while out in the summer heat of Uzbekistan. They were tough field conditions. But their efforts were rewarded by the safe capture of five birds over the course of the field work.

Introducing the Egyptian Vultures

Five vultures, 3 males and 2 females were tagged with Ornitela GSM GPS backpack solar tags. These will give us multiple GPS fixes per day on the movements of the birds for several years.

Guzar is a 3 year old male.

Hissar is a 2 year old male
Johny is a 4 year old male
Shirin is a 2 year old female
Sofia, the oldest bird caught, is a 5 year old female

Don’t forget to keep an eye on the website for updates on the movements and to see where they migrate too!
